Sophie Buijs

Sophie Buijs is a Ph.D. student at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) at the VU University Amsterdam, working on the EU H2020-funded project MYRIAD-EU project (https://www.myriadproject.eu/), which aims to improve the way that multi-(hazard) risk is assessed and managed. In her research, she tries to improve our understanding of post-disaster recovery from a multi-risk perspective. She applies different quantitative, as well as qualitative methods (e.g. remote sensing, programming, statistical analysis, Bayesian Networks, and surveys) to evaluate the recovery of various human- and environmental systems.

In the past year, the world has witnessed many severe disasters caused by multiple hazards whose impacts overlapped in time and space. February this year, two severe earthquakes hit Syria and Turkey shortly after each other, followed by two more powerful earthquakes and over a hundred aftershocks in subsequent weeks [1,2].
