Iris and Menno have made fantastic science movie recommendations in the past couple of years – covering the base for bad-science movies. Since the AGU frenzy is finally over and the upcoming holidays beckon us, I went in a different direction and prepared a list of some of my feel-good holiday movies.
1. The Little Prince

This is a fantasy movie based on a popular children’s book. The movie is centered around a little girl whose minute-by-minute schedule is decided by her mother so that she can pass the entrance exam for a prestigious school. However, her schedule gets sidetracked when she meets her neighbor — a retired aviator — who tells her the story of the little prince and his adventure through the universe. The movie contains impressive allegories depicted through some of the most beautiful animations and amazing voice actors. To top it all, you experience bizarre planets as you explore life away from Earth with the “Little Prince”.

2. Home Alone

Peek into an innovative kid’s mind as he single-highhandedly protects his family’s house from two adult burglars using house traps. Although there are subsequent parts to this movie, all based on the same idea, this one is my favorite because it is associated with my childhood memories; I still find myself laughing at the seemingly over-the-top trap setups shown in this movie.
Whether you have watched this movie or not, I am sure this trailer will tingle your inner child.
3. Spirited Away

If you are looking for a fantasy world with dragons, witches, spirits, and excellent background music, I highly recommend watching this movie. The movie shows the journey of a 10-year-old girl as she wanders into a whimsical world and finds a way to free herself and her family back into the human world.

4. The Princess Bride

Are you still waiting for the perfect moment to watch this movie? Inconceivable! This movie has adventure, pirates, magic, and drama all condensed into one storybook narrated to a sick kid by his grandfather.

5. Die Hard

Things seldom turn out how we expect them to be (we are well aware of this as scientists). On Christmas eve, an unexpected terrorist attack leaves a detective to defend the civilians with “class” action moves and stunts. Although it barely made my list of top-five feel-good movies, I find it entertaining to watch with friends, especially during holidays.
