EGU GA 2025 – A Hydrological Wrap Up

The EGU General Assembly 2025 was an amazing success! Over the course of five sunny days in Vienna, 18,934 presentations were given across 1,102 sessions by the 18,646 on-site participants and 2,338 online attendees. There were plenty of events to choose from for the hydrologists attending. Across sessions, networking events, short courses, posters and medal lectures, we’ve put together some highlights for you to wrap up a fantastic GA 2025!

HS Division highlights

The Hydrological Sciences division was very active during the GA week with 112 scientific sessions across the HS division. There were 2,651 abstracts within the HS Division: 1,187 oral presentations, 1,107 posters, and 357 HS-led PICO presentations.

The HS Division meeting

At lunchtime on Tuesday in Room B, the Hydrological Sciences Division meeting was chaired by division president Alberto Viglione. Attendees got updates about developments within the division across the past year and importantly we got to celebrate some achievements from our division members.

Gerrit de Rooj received the Hydrology and Earth System Sciences (HESS) Outstanding Editor Award for 2024 and there were two recipients of the 2024 Jim Dooge award. Pellet et al. 2024 and Marra et al. 2024 both received recognition for the most outstanding papers of the year.

Awardees of the OSPP prize.

Also celebrated were the recipients of the 2024 Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) prizes. Amirhossein Ershadi, Anastasia Vogelbacher, Anastasios Perdios, Franziska Clerc-Schwarzenbach, Mirjam Scheller, Patrick Sogno, Rui Guo, Sarah Hanus and Simon P. Heselschwerdt were all recognised as very well-deserved recipients. Congratulations!!

On Tuesday evening, Thursday afternoon and Thursday evening the recipients of this years medals from the HS division gave insightful presentations to the HS and GA community. This years awardees are:

Congratulations to you all!! Nominations for next years awards are open until June 15th, so please get your nominations in if you know of a researcher that deserves recognition for their exceptional contributions to hydrology.

ECS networking and courses

2025 was the year of the ECS at the General Assembly! 56% of the abstracts at this years GA were contributed by ECS and it was fantastic to see so many in attendance at the different networking events and short courses throughout the week.

Attendees of the 2025 Hydromeet

At Monday lunchtime, the ECS team of the HS division, along with the International Association of Hydrological Sciences and Young Hydrological Society ran the increasingly-popular annual Hydromeet. With amazing weather, we were able to mingle and network in the sunshine and it was great to see so many new connections being made.

Right: Barbara Ervens, Helen Glaves, Giulia Zuecco, Jantiene Baartman, Eduardo Queiroz Alves & Ronald Pöppl answer questions at Meet the Editors: How to Peer Review.

On Tuesday evening, all ECS across all divisions were invited to a networking event that needed two rooms to fit all those who attended and mingled. On Thursday, the short courses Meet the Editors 1, 2: How to write, revise and publish your manuscript & Meet the Editors 3: How to peer-review brought together journal editors and ECS to chat about how to build publication-ready manuscripts and how to carry out peer review. Thank you to all our participating editors: Svenja Fischer (J. Hydrol), Thom Bogaard (HESS), Heike Langenberg (Commun. Earth Environ.),  Barbara Ervens (EGU Publications Committee Chair, ACP), Helen Glaves (ESS, COPDESS), Giulia Zuecco (J. Hydrol), Jantiene Baartman (CATENA), Eduardo Queiroz Alves (EGU Editorial Manager) & Ronald Pöppl (Phys. Geog).

Save the dates for the EGU GA 2026!

Melissa Reidy is a PhD candidate in riparian ecosystem science at Umeå University in Sweden. She’s been asking how riparian processes interact with dynamic hydrology to affect the chemistry of northern headwater streams. Her previous work has been in the temperate zones of Australia, where she’s focused on hydrological impacts of drought and fire on wetlands.

Archita's doctoral research at Lancaster University focuses on groundwater microbiology and chemistry. She is also an outreach coordinator of the Early Career Scientist network of EGU's hydrological sciences division.

Christina is a hydrologist at the University of Montpellier in the South of France. She specialises in integrating remote sensing data into regional and local hydrological models. She's also the incoming 2023 Early career scientist (ECS) representative of the EGU's Hydrological Sciences division.

Alberto Viglione is an Associate Professor at the Politecnico of Turin since 2019. His research focuses on the characterization of hydro-meteorological extremes. In 2021, he was elected HS Division President for the period 2023-2025.
