How do you ensure quality in your flow modeling? Participate in a survey!

The challenges in hydraulic engineering are increasing due to the growing threat of floods and heavy rainfall events caused by climate change (as experienced several times in Europe in recent years) on the one hand and the more frequent low water situations and the associated requirements for ecological enhancement of water bodies, on the other hand. In this context, reliable estimates of the hydraulic variables of the respective water bodies (e.g. water levels or flow velocities) are therefore essential.

For this, numerical flow models have become a standard tool in hydraulic engineering practice over the past decades. Rapid developments, particularly in terms of data availability and computing power, allow for increasingly complex and detailed models. This enables the generation of large datasets and detailed results at an ever-faster pace.

Quality assurance of hydraulic models

This development raises the question of how the quality of modeling and its results can be verified and ensured. Numerous factors and influences play a role here, which can vary significantly depending on the project. These can include the experience and knowledge of the individual modelers, the type of review by the project management, as well as data availability or the thoroughness of the project specification and supervision by the clients.

The need for standardized concepts for quality assurance (QA) and quality management (QM) is therefore evident. However, directly specifying quantitative quality criteria or error measures is not feasible due to the varying conditions and requirements of each modeling project. Thus, a systemic approach is necessary, balancing standardized mechanisms with sufficient flexibility for diverse projects.

In cooperation with the German Association for Water, Wastewater and Waste (DWA, https://en.dwa.de/en/) Working Group WW-1.7, we are developing such an approach,  with the aim of providing recommendations for quality assurance and evaluation to all project participants – from clients to modelers. These are not intended to be another modeling guide but rather a comprehensive QA/QM aid for the process chain from project initiation to archiving.

Currently, as part of our research, we – the Institute for Water and Environment at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – are conducting an international survey on the state of QA/QM in flow modeling. We invite you to participate via this link : https://www.soscisurvey.de/QMQS_in_HN_Modellierung/

Fabian Knepper is a research assistant at the Institute for Water and Environment of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. His work focuses on one- and multi-dimensional flow simulations in Hydraulic Engineering, especially regarding River Hydraulics. He is a member of the DWA Working Group WW-1.7 “Quality Assurance and Management in the Use of Multidimensional Flow Models”.


Peter Oberle is head of the section Numerical Hydraulics at the Institute for Water and Environment of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany. His main areas of work include, among others, River Hydraulics, Hydropower Engineering and Flood Protection & Risk Management. Aside from that, he is speaker of the DWA Working Group WW-1.7 “Quality Assurance and Management in the Use of Multidimensional Flow Models”.


Mário Franca has more than 25 years of professional and academic experience and he is Professor of Hydraulic Engineering and Water Resources Management at the Institute of Water and Environment of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, in Germany. Among other topics, he investigates the stability of large debris during floods and its integration in flood management practice.
