Saikat Sengupta

Dr. Saikat Sengupta is a Senior Scientist at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, India, where he studies the role of water isotopes in the hydrological cycle and the Indian summer monsoon. His research combines observations, isotope geochemistry, atmospheric processes and modelling to understand moisture transport, rain- isotope variability, and the links between present-day climate processes and paleoclimate. He has worked extensively on water and vapour isotope measurements and their application to understanding monsoon dynamics

What happens to monsoon raindrops before they reach the ground?

What happens to monsoon raindrops before they reach the ground?

Using stable isotopes to uncover a hidden step in Earth’s water cycle The Indian summer monsoon transforms South Asia’s landscape. Rivers swell, reservoirs replenish, crops receive life-sustaining water, and millions await relief after months of intense heat. But what happens to a raindrop between the cloud and the ground? Not every raindrop reaches the surface …[Read More]
