Yesterday, the European Geosciences Union (EGU) hosted a vibrant and impactful event focused on Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) within the geosciences community. This networking session provided an open and welcoming space for participants to meet the dedicated volunteer members of the EGU EDI Committee and learn more about the initiatives implemented by the EGU to raise awareness of the diverse challenges faced by geoscientists in their careers.
The event was a chance to engage with colleagues and fellow participants who are passionate about EDI topics, especially those which may personally affect them or their peers. It provided a safe and inclusive space for attendees to share their experiences, stories, and insights, and to exchange feedback on key issues encountered in the geosciences. With EDI being at the heart of the session, participants were encouraged to contribute ideas and suggestions for addressing these challenges and creating a more inclusive community within the field.
The event kicked off with opening remarks from the EDI Committee chair, Lisa Wingate, and EGU President, Peter van der Beek, who both emphasized the importance of EGU’s commitment to inclusivity and the crucial need for continued work in this area. Their words underscored the values of the EGU and set the stage for a meaningful conversation about the collective responsibility to ensure that everyone, regardless of background or identity, has the support and opportunities to thrive in their scientific careers.
A highlight of the event was the interactive EDI community wall, where participants shared their thoughts and feedback on the work the committee is doing. This collaborative space allowed attendees to reflect on their own experiences and contribute to the ongoing conversation about inclusivity in the geosciences.
The event was a resounding success, providing a space for reflection, discussion, and collaboration on the vital topic of EDI in the geosciences. It’s clear that the EGU’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment for all geoscientists remains as strong as ever. The conversations started at this event are just the beginning, and the EDI Committee looks forward to continuing to drive positive change within the EGU community.
EDI is for you too!
In addition to the networking event, the EGU’s EDI efforts continue throughout the General Assembly with an EDI Booth. Here, participants have the opportunity to engage with the “EDI Inclusivity Tree,” a visual representation of EGU’s dedication to diversity and inclusion. Attendees can also take part in the EDI Quiz, which is held twice a day at 10:30 and 15:00. This fun and engaging activity encourages further interaction and offers a lighthearted way to raise awareness about EDI issues. Oh, and winners get EDI merch as a gift!
We encourage everyone to visit the EDI Booth and participate in the EDI Quiz during the remaining days of the General Assembly.
The work our EDI committee does represents EGU’s values, which aim to make the geosciences a more inclusive and welcoming space for all.
