ECS at EGU23: networking events and more!

The EGU23 General Assembly have a plethora of events built for – and by – Early Career Scientists (ECS), from how to navigate Europe’s largest geoscience conference to developing your network and exploring your career choices. Below are some of the big things to look out for:

 First-time attendee Networking (on-site only) Tue, 25 Apr, 12:45–13:45 (CET) Room 3.29/30

If this is your first time at the General Assembly, perhaps a mentee looking to meet others, this informal meet-up is the perfect opportunity to build a network with other first-timers and mentees from a range of disciplines. Just drop-in and mingle! Light snacks are provided.

ECS Networking and Careers Reception (on-site only), Tue, 25 Apr, 19:00–20:30 (CET) Rooftop foyer

This event brings together ECS, experienced researchers, those in other science-related careers, in and out of academia all under the panoramic(-ish) view of the rooftop foyer. The Reception is your opportunity to talk to award-winning scientists, build connections with your peers, and get advice from those further along in their career. Just turn up, grab a snack and talk science, careers, or whatever you want.

Update: all places at the ECS Reception are now full; we are not currently taking any more registrations. Please keep an eye on EGU social media for updates in case spaces become available.  Please check the Pop-up Networking page on the assembly programme for community-led networking events, or organize your own using the Pop-up Networker!

ECS Forum (on-site only), Wed, 26 Apr, 12:45–13:45 (CET) Room 3.29/30

Want to get involved in EGU? Perhaps you want to have your say on how the Assembly is run, or learn how the ECS are represented in the Union. The Forum provides the space for the ECS community to give feedback, find out how the ECS are represented within the Union, and what EGU does for the ECS during the General Assembly and throughout the rest of the year – from running a Campfire talk, being a blog writer, or becoming an ECS Representative yourself. The forum will be followed by a networking event, with lunch provided.

Division Networking events

From meet-ups in the conference centre, to lunches and dinners beyond, ECS belonging to multiple Divisions have traditionally organised networking events especially for their ECS peers. Be it an informal lunch with other Natural Hazards researchers or coffee and chat with scientists studying Geodesy, the General Assembly’s Pop-up networking page is the place to go for finding peer-to-peer networking. Be sure to keep an eye on the programme page as it’s updated with more events closer to the General Assembly!

Can’t find a networking event for you? Then organise your own using the Assembly’s Pop-up network scheduler! Events can be run within the conference centre during the day in dedicated networking rooms, or even outside as planned picnics, or even beyond the conference centre in Vienna. Beyond the Division events are other member-led opportunities, with some returning classics such as the Pride & Allies Reception and the Geoscience Games Night!

Keep an eye on the EGU programme as well as the EGU blogs for more updates on upcoming events!
