#vEGU21 Session in the Spotlight: GMPV2.1

The vEGU21 abstract deadline is approaching as fast as anything happens in 2020 (which is either really fast or really slow, depending on who you are…). Have you chosen a session to submit to? Whatever else happens, we promise this will be the cheapest trip to Vienna you will take all year!

Whether you aren’t stressed at all (like a passive margin), or super stressed (like a collision zone), we have a session for you. Linking together structural geochemistry, petrology, and structural geology, this interdisciplinary session organised by Francesca Piccoli, Paola Manzotti, José Alberto Padrón-Navarta and Esther Schwarzenbach is a must-see. From the convenors:

The reconstruction of the tectono-metamorphic history of subducted and exhumed rocks deeply influences our understanding of geodynamic processes and geochemical cycling at convergent margins. Mountain chains are splendid natural laboratories where metamorphic rocks represent the key to access large scale, long lasting, tectonic processes such as exhumation, or composition of geologic fluids and their role in geochemical cycling and deformation. Field mapping, structural analysis, petrology, geochemistry of metamorphic rocks are the macro to micro-scale tools used to better understand the rock metamorphic history, establish the controlling factors of the final geometry of the orogen (mélange type vs. coherent exhumation of metamorphic units), and investigate metamorphic/geochemical processes at the slab-mantle wedge interface.

Mike Jollands is an experimental petrologist at the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, New York, USA. He studies the diffusion and substitution mechanisms of trace elements, making use of high temperature and pressure equipment to simulate volcanic and mantle conditions. www.mikejollands.com
