Join the Life-Work-Balance activities at EGU23!

Dear fellow scientists (and readers joining us at EGU23!),

It’s us again, the “Life-Work-Balance” group of EGU. We are a team of scientists organizing various events related to life-work-balance during the EGU General Assembly and would like to share our experience with you. For this year’s General Assembly we are organizing several short courses and pop-up events to offer some guidance for balance in academia. Hope you can join us at one or several of these events. We are looking forward to meeting you.

Here’s what we have planned for EGU23:

Do you feel it’s time to overcome your fear of presenting at a conference?

Join us at the “Mind your Head: Scared of giving presentations? ” short course on Monday, 4:15 pm, both on-site and online. Iris van Zelst, Elena Spagnuolo, Sam Illingworth, and Stephanie Zihms will talk about their experiences and best-practices. You will learn how to handle stage fright and what a good presentation for online and in-person folks looks like.

Are you interested in how life-work-balance is accomplished in different cultures?

Listen to scientists of different institutions worldwide sharing their experiences in the “Mind your head: Life-Work-Balance – What does it mean? “ short course on Thursday, 2pm, both on-site and online. We will analyse the results of a survey that you can fill out here and Eleanna Asvestari will talk about what life-work-balance means at the University of Helsinki (Finland).

Do you feel overwhelmed by expectations of being a great parent AND a great researcher?

Get inspiration at the “Surviving in Academia as a Parent” short course on Monday, 2 pm, both on-site and online. We will focus on the challenges of being an academic parent and hear stories of moms and dads and how they survived academic parenting. Furthermore, the EDI committee organizes the Union Symposia US4 “Juggling parenting and caring responsibilities with a career in the geosciences: barriers and opportunities to increasing accessibility and inclusion” taking place on Tuesday, 2 pm.

Do you wish to join pop-up events by the life-work-balance EGU group?

Keep an eye out in the Programme for pop-up events scheduled during the General Assembly. We are planning to have a yoga session with Professor and EGU medalist Lisa Tauxe, as well as a climbing gathering, a walk through the park together and a play-date for academic parents joining with kids at the playground Sparefrohspielplatz. We will also be available at the EGU booth at dedicated times, if you want to talk to us. The Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) committee also invites everyone to the EDI reception (children are welcome), which will be held on Monday evening.

Need more practical tips?

Have a look at last year’s blogpost on how to include 5 minutes of mindfulness easily into your daily EGU General Assembly experience on-site or virtually.

We look forward to meeting you at EGU23!
