At the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2011 there are a variety of union wide sessions. Some of these are summarised below, with the others (such as Short Courses, GeoCinema) following in a Part II post.
Union Meetings
These are meetings that are open to members of the union, some are invitation only (noted). A key Union Meeting to which all are encouraged to attend is UM1: Plenary in Room D on Monday 4 April from 12:15 to 13:15. This is an annual event where the past and future development of EGU is discussed. The Plenary is open to all EGU members and all EGU General Assembly 2011 participants. The whole council will attend and is the main meeting for bringing forward new ideas to the organization. A free lunch buffet (sandwiches & soft drinks) will be served.
Union Symposia
Union Symposia include US0:EGU Award Ceremony in Room D, on Wednesday, 06 Apr from 17:30 to 20:00. Details on Awards and Medals of the European Geosciences Union can be found on the EGU homepage.
Other Union Symposia consider A Planet Under Pressure, The Future of Water Cycle Earth Observing Systems, How Science Can Aid Society in Tackling Emerging Risks along with the sessions on The 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake and The 11 March 2011 Tohoku (Sendai) Earthquake and Tsunami.
Union Masterclass
A new addition this year is a Union Masterclass UMC1: “What are the unresolved questions and future perspectives for palaeoclimate research? An EGU Masterclass by André Berger and Wolfgang H. Berger”. During this masterclass, two pioneers with together nearly 100 years of experience in Palaeo-climate research, Prof. Dr. André Berger and Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Berger will exchange their thoughts and ideas to the question: What are the unknowns of the natural variability of past climates? The masterclass be will be in
Room D on Wednesday 06 April from 13:30 to 15:00.
Great Debate
There is one Great Debate this year: GDG1:How will Europe face the raw materials crisis?. This is in Room D on Tuesday 5 April from 15:30–17:00. In this debate, experts from academia and industry will discuss the current state of the minerals industry, in Europe and on a global sale; they will explore which metals may be in short supply and what can done in universities, government agencies and industry to mitigate the problem. There are variety of speakers from different institutions ranging from academia to industry.
Medal and Keynote Lectures
There are 32 medal lectures and six Keynote Lectures during the General Assembly.
