The Fire Research Institute (FRI) was founded in 1983 as a non-profit organization with the lofty goal of promoting world peace through fire science. The concept was stolen from Richard Nixon, who, you will remember, opened up relations between the US and China by sending a ping-pong team to visit China. I thought that more scientific interaction between nations, as well as sports and economics, might help people understand each other better.
Jason Greenlee (Hawaii, USA) studied at the University of California at Santa Cruz, and has worked in the Department of Interior of the United States. Currently he is responsible for Fire Research Institute, where he has collected over 80,000 books, journal articles, videos, training manuals, conferences, reports, news and other related materials wildfires. Jason is also an expert surfer.
I know many people in the fire culture who have spent their careers bridging cultural barriers, and I hope FRI has contributed in a small way to this. Following this idea, FRI has always offered its services free of charge, so that no one need be excluded. FRI is a one-person operation, which has had more attention since I retired four years ago. I can now spend much more time finding new publications for Current Titles in Wildland Fire (CT) and the online bibliography. CT is emailed every month to anyone wishing to have it.
The bibliography now supports almost 125K citations, and has recently been upgraded to allow users more powerful searches and also to allow them to request publications. Not many people realize that the online bibliography is also an online directory, containing 100K names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of fire researchers and managers.
