EGU22: 10 community Pop-Up Events to look out for!

The EGU community has always organised their own events, whether these are planned weeks to months in advance or spontaneously during the General Assembly. Since the advent of the EGU Pop-up Scheduler it’s now even easier to organise and plan your own event at the assembly. Many of the events are Division-specific, from picnics and dinners to networking sessions, so be sure to look and see what you Division(s) are up to! In this blog we’re looking at the Union-wide events – both physical and virtual – which people can join regardless of Division and which would be of interest to our members. Check them out below:

 

Stretch & Meditate: Monday & Wednesday, 12:00 – 13:00 CEST, Virtual

Organised by the EGU Work-Life Balance Working Group, this gentle video guide for stretching and meditation will refresh both mind and body. Take a break from the assembly’s busy schedule and make time for yourself by following these simple video instructions.

Move, Stretch, and Lunch in the Park: Tuesday, 12:00 – 12:30 CEST, Physical & Offsite

Held in the Schmetterlingswiese (Butterfly meadow) in Donaupark just adjacent to the conference centre, this is your opportunity to work out any conference stiffness through stretching whilst also meeting other attendees with a picnic after. So limber up, bring some food and mingle with fellow researchers and science enthusiasts!

How to find funding: Tuesday, 12:00 – 12:30 CEST, Physical & Onsite

A midday mingle on terrace G, where you can meet with experts and conveners of the short courses dedicated to helping you find funding: “SC2.3 How to find funding?” and “SC2.4 European Research Council (ERC) Funding Opportunities in Geosciences“.

Location: EGU Networking zone at terrace G

 

Under-Represented European Countries in the Geosciences Networking Event: Tuesday, 12:00 – 13:00 CEST, Hybrid & Onsite

Dedicated to researchers from nations under-represented within the geoscience community, this event seeks to uncover barriers and work towards solutions which drive towards a more inclusive community.

Location: Networking room (red level)

Have a walk: Wednesday, 12:00 – 13:00 CEST, Physical & Offsite

Organised by the Early Career Scientist Work-Life Balance Group, use this event to refresh yourself and meet others during a lunchtime stroll outside the conference centre. Meet with the group to the right of the conference centre entrance at 12:00.

Location: Austria Vienna Centre entrance

 

Building a Network for Sustainable Development: Wednesday, 16:30 – 17:30 CEST, Virtual 

Join with an international community of geoscientists in discussing how researchers can meet with environmental challenges, from climate change and natural hazards to resource distribution and renewable energy. This event will focus on building a global network of scientists and researchers interested in pooling their skills and talent to aid these challenges, from greater knowledge sharing to educational outreach activities and more.

First-time Attendee & Mentor-Mentee Network Refresher: Wednesday, 17:00 – 18:00 CEST, Virtual

It’s halfway through the assembly. You’ve networked, you’ve heard the debates, you’ve attended the short courses. Now is the perfect opportunity for mentees to check in with their mentor and refresh their networks. This event gives you the chance to meet colleagues online and connect with other mentors, mentees, and first-time attendees.

EGU Pride online networking event: Wednesday, 18:00 – 19:00, Virtual

Open to LGBTQIA+ folks and allies, this is the first of two EGU Pride social events. Meet the EGU Pride network and learn about their activities, how you can get involved, and socialise with others in this friendly, informal event.

Indoor climbing: Thursday, 09:00 – 11:00 CEST, Physical & Offsite

Organised by the Work-Life Balance Group, take a break to exercise your limbs by climbing with other researchers at ÖTK Kletterhalle Vienna [U1 metro stop Stephanplatz]. Attendees will need to register at reception before meeting with the group inside.

The work life balance group will meet you after 9AM inside. Each person will need to register at the door as individuals and we’ll spontaneously meet inside the climbing wall.

Jobs & Careers Fair: Thursday, 12:00 – 13:00 CEST, Physical & Onsite

Are you looking for your next career opportunity? Or maybe want someone to check your CV? Join this networking event organised by the Early Career Scientist’s Jobs & Careers Working Group to help give you the edge whilst you meet other job seekers.

Location: EGU Networking zone at terrace G

 

EGU Pride: Thursday, 18:00 – 19:00 CEST, Physical & Onsite 

The second EGU Pride event during the week, this networking session is open to all LGBTQIA+ folks and allies. Similar to the virtual event, this is your chance to meet other members, learn about the EGU Pride network, and share your thoughts on making a more inclusive community.

Location: Networking room (red level)
