Here we go again!! Just a few days and EGU25 will start in Wien. As we are sure you will discover outbreaking research in your field (and not), we want to remind you that EGU is also social events and networking!
The ECS team of GMPV (as much as other 22 Divisions) will be at the GA, and you can find us with short course and events around the ACV. Here is a list of where and when you can find us!
Sunday 27 April
Are you reaching Vienna in the morning? Well, why don’t you join the EGU Scavanger Hunt @ NHM Vienna at 14:00 at the Natural History Museum! Organised by The ECS WG Activities & Impact team the hunt will take place over 1h, you’ll be divided in pairs and you’ll have the chance to visit for free the museum. Place are limited (max 35 people), on first arrived-first served bases. Open to all Union members. The event will take place also on Monday morning (08:45).
Get ready for the Opening Reception! The event will be held at the ACV conference center starting at 18.30. This is also a great opportunity to register in advance for the conference, avoiding the queue of the day after, and to start your networking!
If you are a mentor or mentee, you can find a designated spot for you (look for the beach flag), where you can meet with your match.
Monday 28 April
Do you want to hear more about ECS activities, or share your ideas and doubts? You can join our ECS Representative, Daniel Evans, the incoming Union Rep Stefanie Kaboth-Bahr, and Simon Clark for the daily Early Career Scientist Coffee Catch-Up at the EGU Booth at 10:15 (From Monday to Thursday – Hall X2).
Remember to join the GMPV Division for the GMPV Division Outstanding ECS Award Lecture by Renée Jade Tamblyn at 12:00 in Room K1. An amazing opportunity to hear from our ECS Award of this year about the Archean geological water cycle!
If you are a First Time attendee, you can join the event for the First-time Attendee Networking at 18:00, where you can start your networking at EGU25.
Tuesday 29 April
Are you a Mentor or a Mentee? Join the Mentor/Mentee Meet-up at lunch time (12:45–13:45), where you can be paired with your assigned Mentee or Mentor.
At 18:00, you can join the ECS Networking Reception at the Rooftop Foyer, to meet other ECS and enjoy some refreshments together with your peers!
And … stay with us for the GMPV Social Dinner at 19:00! This year, we decided to go back to a pre-covid event, the Tango Social, where you can have dinner at Mi Barrio (Münzwardeingasse 2, 1060 Wien) while enjoying a Tango Argentino Beginner Class (5 €)!
If you want to join us, Register here!!!!
Wednesday 30 April
On Wednesday, two amazing events will take place, both at 18:00, the Pride & Allies Reception at the Rooftop Foyer, and the Geoscience Games Night, Foyer D.
Thursday 1 May
At 12:45, in Room D2, join us for the Annual Meeting of the GMPV Division, where you will be hearing updates on the division and future plans from the Division President Holly Stein. Simona Gabrielli, ECS Outgoing Representative for GMPV, will also present the ECS activities done during the year, and will introduce the two new ECS Representatives, Piyal Halder and Bartosz Puzio!
At the same time, we highlight the ECS forum (12.45 – lunchtime), in Room 3.16/17 where you can give feedback on ECS experience during the GA, but also learn more about what the ECS community does throughout the year.
In case your Thursday afternoon is empty of sessions and debates, you can join the Activities and Impact ECS Working Group in their Urban Geology Tour! Geoscientists Bernhard Salcher (University of Salzburg) and Stephanie Neuhuber (BOKU ) will guide us through Vienna and its surroundings, including a visit to the National Park Alte-Donau, Danube power plant, and the cemetery of Vienna. Please register here.
Late in the afternoon, at 19:00, don’t miss the Robert Wilhelm Bunsen Medal Lecture by Trevor Russell Ireland, who will discuss the provenance of Earth’s water.
Friday 2 May
Last day of our 2025 GA! While the most of the networking events are ended, you can join the discussion in two interesting events, the Union Symposia Gender in Geoscience, at 8:30 in Room E1, and, in the same room but at 16:15, the Great Debate Late-Breaking Great Debate: How should the global geoscience community respond to attacks on science?.
During the week, you can also attend Short Courses organized by our ECS team together with other ECSs:
- On Monday morning (10:45-12:30), join our Rep Simona Gabrielli in Navigating Your Path to Mid-Career: How to become a supervisor. Panelists will share their experience on supervision, from supervisors and supervised point of view. This short course is relevant to scientists who are starting their career as students or researchers/professors, and want to know more on the best supervision practice.
- Geology 101: An introduction for non-geologists (Tue, 29 Apr, 12:45–13:45) will give a quick introduction to geology to non-geologists, creating connections with other geoscience topics (e.g. petrology and geomorphology). The short course is organized together with GD and GM Divisions, with our Veronica Peverelli as co-convener.
- Join again Veronica in the short course Transferable skills: what are they and do I have them?, Wednesday, 30 Apr, at 08:30. In this interactive workshop, you will start identifying your transferable skills, highlighting careers where these will be necessary.
Last but not least, you will find GMPV ECS members at EGU25 in person and online. If you have any questions, and you want to know more about GMPV ECS, feel free to get in touch:
