Highlights at IAG Scientific Assembly 2025 – What you need to know

It is almost time for the scientific assembly of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), an association of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). The EGU Geodesy Division and the IAG have worked together for many years. For example, the IAG has been the main sponsor of the Geodesy Reception at past EGU General Assemblies. Besides this, the IAG coordinates global geodetic research, develops standards, supports international collaboration, and maintains essential geodetic infrastructure and services. And, every four years geodesists from around the world gather for a week of scientific presentations and networking at the IAG Scientific Assembly. The last meeting in 2021 happened in China during the pandemic with a large portion of attendees attending remotely (read the recap here). Now it is time again and we meet in Rimini (Italy) during the first week of September. New for this year, several social events have been added to the programme thanks to the newly established IAG Early Career Scientists (ECS) group. Here is a snapshot of what will be happening.

Icebreaker

The official programme starts with the Icebreaker on Sunday (August 31st) at 5:30 pm (CEST). The icebreaker will be at the Palacongressi, the conference center where the entire scientific programme will take place. Join us for an evening for networking and getting to know your colleagues from Geodesy and neighbouring disciplines.

ECS Dinner

Like at EGU General Assemblies, we organise a joint dinner for early career scientists (ECS) on Monday (September 1st) at 8:00 pm (CEST). But, in this case, ECS are students, PhD candidates, or practising scientists who received their highest academic degree within the past 10 years (the period can be extended due to career interruptions). If you are an ECS and want to join us for an informal dinner on Monday evening (with appetizers sponsored by IAG), then please register early to secure your place:

https://forms.gle/S8PDzr2NGThB7u3G7 (participation is limited to a maximum of 100 ECS)

Name and location of the restaurant will be provided to registered participants only.

“Women in Geodesy” breakfast

Female or non-binary people are very rare in the field of geodesy. To increase the communication within this under-represented group, we gather for an IAG sponsored breakfast on the second day (Tuesday, September 2nd) at 8:00 am in a coffee shop close to the conference center. Let’s start the busy conference day by networking with other female and non-binary colleagues. Please register early as places are limited to 50 attendees:

Name and location of the coffee shop will be provided to registered participants only.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you in Rimini!

The IAG ECS group

The Early Career Scientists (ECS) initiative within the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) aims to provide a platform for young researchers and professionals in the field of geodesy. ECS offers opportunities for networking, collaboration, and development through workshops, meetings, and other activities that support career growth and knowledge exchange. The IAG ECS community fosters an inclusive environment for emerging scientists to contribute to the advancement of geodesy, ensuring that their voices are heard and valued within the global geodetic community.
