I am PhD student of Glaciology from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Pune, India. My research focuses on the microclimate of valley glaciers, which is a fancy way to tell “I study special types of winds found only near glaciers”. These winds play an important role in how fast a glacier melts, by controlling heat exchanges between the glacier and the atmosphere. However, due the scarcity of meteorological observations on glaciers in the Himalaya, we largely do not know about the impact of these winds on the glacier melt. I am trying to solve this problem by developing cheaper sensors, analyzing already available data, and incorporating the insights which I get into climate models. I tweet/X as @AlphaLife2000, and my email ID is krishnanandj2000@gmail.com.

A First-Timer’s Journey to the Heart of the Himalayas

The route of our journey from Srinagar to Panikhar.

I am Krishnanand J, a graduate student in glaciology from IISER Pune, India. This is a story about my very first field trip to the Himalaya. Coming from a small village in Kerala, which is the southernmost state of India, going to the Himalaya is considered a big thing. It is like a camel visiting Antarctica. So below, I will take you along on an immersive journey, as I tell you about my first fie ...[Read More]
