Climate: Past, Present & Future
Georgy Falster

Dr Georgy Falster

My name is Georgy Falster, and I am a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Australian National University, working with the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes. I started this work during my previous postdoctoral role at Washington University in St. Louis. My main research interest is in using climate variability of the past one to two thousand years to provide context for current and future climate change. To do this, I use information from palaeoclimate proxy data, climate models, and observations. I have a particular interest in the water cycle, and major drivers of water cycle variability (such as the Walker Circulation). The Walker Circulation: what is it and why does it matter

The Walker Circulation: what is it and why does it matter

What is the Walker Circulation? The El Niño Southern Oscillation, or ‘ENSO’, is one of the major causes of year to year variability in Earth’s climate. ENSO is characterised by: changes in the temperature of the ocean’s surface in the tropical Pacific Ocean, and by changes in atmospheric circulation in an east-west direction above the Pacific Ocean.   Number two in that list is what makes ENS ...[Read More]
