Writing for the BG blog

Thank you for your interest in writing for the Biogeoscience Blog! The BG blog is created for and by EGU’s biogeoscience community. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any ideas, feedback or questions.

What we publish

Broadly speaking anyone can write for the blog and all ideas are welcome. Since the main readership of the blog are EGU members, our focus is on content that is interesting to as much of our community as possible, especially early career researchers, for example:

  • General introductions to scientific concepts, subfields, or methods
  • Career advice and ECR support
  • Community building and networking
  • EGU, BG and GA (General Assembly) internal announcements
  • Relevant books, films, poems, or art – maybe even your own?

But this list should not limit your creativity, many things are possible! However, generally speaking, we do not publish posts on individual studies, papers or researchers, except in cases where there is a direct link to EGU (e.g. EGU Medalists).

Publishing timeline and process

Publishing a blog post takes between 2 and 6 months, depending on the capacities of the editorial team. If you want your blog post to appear at a specific time, especially prior to the General Assembly, please reach out early! We’re happy to  try to accommodate individual needs and timelines, but our editorial team is voluntary-based so we are not always able to do so.

Publishing guidelines

Audience: Always keep your audience in mind when writing! The main readership of our blog are EGU members, however, since EGU covers a lot of topical fields, it should still be free of jargon, acronyms, or too technical language. Also, non-scientific readers, e.g. journalists, might visit the blog, too, so keep them in mind as well.

Text: Blog posts should not be much longer than 1000 words, but can be shorter. Especially for longer blog posts, make sure to use paragraphs, subsections or quotes to structure the text flow.

Images: Blog posts should include images. This could be from fieldwork, daily research activities, the ecosystem you are studying or anything really. If you have no pictures or need inspiration on what could be suitable, the editors are there to help. Wherever possible, captions should be used for images. The author should be credited together with a link to the original source, if appropriate. Images should be open access and if not, permission must be obtained from the author before publishing.

Use of AI: We do not accept AI-generated text or figures in our submissions. Use of AI for spell checking, grammar and language checking is ok.

If you have any further questions, contact the editors. Please also check out the general guidelines for EGU blogs.
