Hw to get involved in Science-to-Policy in the Biogeoscience Division

As scientists we possess invaluable expertise that can help shape evidence-informed policies, and decision-makers in the EU are increasingly recognising the importance of scientific input. The EGU can play a key role in this process, with its advice already being considered in major policy developments such as the Nature Restoration Law. As part of these efforts, the EGU Science-for-Policy Team (led by Chloe Hill) publishes a monthly newsletter that highlights opportunities for scientists to engage with policy, important legislative updates, and practical guidance on science-policy interactions.

Some things that are currently coming up:

      • Call for Evidence: The European Oceans Pact: The European Oceans Pact aims to foster an integrated and holistic approach to ocean governance across all sectors to support coastal communities and rural communities that depend on the ocean. It aims to address urgent issues such as the triple planetary crisis and competition for marine space. You can get more information and provide feedback here until midnight CET on 17 February 2025.

      • SAM conference: From 26 – 27 May 2025, The Science Advice Mechanism to the European Commission will be holding the next installment of Europe’s foremost science advice conference series. This year’s conference in Vienna will focus on three themes: Science advice in politics and society, Designing better institutions, and Building skills and practices. Not only can participants propose a parallel session until 14 February, but they can also organize an in-person or online side event before or after the conference and feature in the conference’s ideas market.

You can explore the latest issue here: EGU Science for Policy Newsletter – January 2025! Suscribe to the newsletter and keep an eyes out for future events and calls if you’re interested to contribute. If you have any questions or would like to get involved, you can also contact Elias Symeonakis who is the Biogeoscience divison’s Science-to-Policy officer (e.symeonakis@mmu.ac.uk). To keep our Biogeosciences community informed on policy-relevant topics, he will from time to time share BG-related excerpts from the newsletter here on the BG blog.
