GfGD National Conference – Present a Poster

756474645As part of the GfGD National Conference, we would like to give students the opportunity to contribute your ideas on the conference topics, share your research (e.g., MGeol, MSci, MSc, and Mapping Projects), and profile GfGD University Group Activities. This will happen through a poster session.

Poster sessions form an important part of many academic conferences. Posters will be displayed throughout the day for all participants to read. Students will stand with their poster during the wine reception and be available to answer questions and discuss topics they raise with the rest of the conference participants. These sessions provoke great discussions, networking and raise the profile of the work you have been doing. The opportunity to present a poster at a conference is rare for undergraduates, and hence this will also be great experience and good for your CV.

We therefore invite students to submit abstracts relating to the broad topic of “Fighting Global Poverty – Can Geologists Help?” This could take one of a number of forms:

UNDERGRADUATE/POSTGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH: Geology-related fieldwork or research with a focus on developing countries, sustainable development, community engagement or technical capacity building. This includes (a) Mapping projects in less economically developed countries, (b) MSci/MGeol research projects, (c) MSc research projects and (d) PhD Research.

UNIVERSITY GROUP ACTIVITIES: GfGD University Groups are encouraged to submit a poster outlining the activities that their group have been involved in over the past 1-2 years (e.g., seminars, discussion groups, film nights) and the plans they have for the future. These will be really helpful for other students to think about how to set up a group and the types of activities new and existing groups could run.

CONFERENCE SUB-THEME – ‘Effective Communication for Effective Development’: Based on the recommended reading and discussion activities (available at http://www.gfgd.org/conferences/conference-reading), individual and groups of students are invited to submit posters on the theme of ‘skills for sustainability’ – discussing the skills that geologists must develop to apply their knowledge in an effective and sustainable manner, and proposing ways in which we can develop them.

A number of small prizes will be awarded on the day, including Best Research Poster (Undergraduate and Postgraduate); Best University Group Poster; Best Poster Based on Discussion Groups; Overall Best Poster Award.

Deadline for submitting abstracts is midday 16th August 2013. Full details and information, as well as advice on producing an academic poster, can be found on our website.

‘Fighting Global Poverty – Can Geologists Help?’ is the first GfGD National Conference, kindly supported and hosted by the Geological Society of London. For information on the day and registration please visit our website – www.gfgd.org/conferences
