Geology for Global Development

Looking ahead to the summer…

SL272622The sunshine is out, we have our first male singles Wimbledon Champion in 77 years, and the smell of BBQs is wafting through our windows – it is officially summertime! Over the summer the GfGD blog is going to be busy, with a range of interesting articles. As normal, we’ll still be publishing articles on Mondays and Wednesdays, with our Friday Photos continuing as well. You may also find a number of bonus blogs on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as we get a range of guest blogs sent to us. Here’s a rundown of what to expect and why…

On Mondays we’re going to start a summer series of blogs exploring various aspects that link to excellence, professionalism and social responsibility – and how to apply these themes throughout your careers. These are core themes that GfGD are keen to promote to our members and investigate how they are put into practice. Excellence, professionalism and social responsibility are fundamental to sustainable development. Understanding how to do something well can impact upon whether a project is still operating many years after its inception.

We’ll be starting of by exploring topics that are relevant to most students now – ‘How to’ or ‘Top Tips’ guides for writing dissertations and mapping projects, using social media and other forms of communication, challenges in international field work, thinking about ideal jobs in the geosciences. Each of these topics will be related to building an understanding of excellence and professionalism and/or social responsibility. Whether in two-three years time you’ll be working in the mining sector, an engineering geologist or an academic, these are skills that can help you to think about the impact and effectiveness of your work. It would be great to have your thoughts and comments on these topics as we write about them.

On Wednesdays we’ll be exploring all aspects of the GfGD Conference. We’ll be publishing interviews with our exciting line up of speakers, announcing a range of competitions and ways you can get involved (including our 2013 Blog Competition being launched later this week), and writing articles that will provoke discussion and debate prior to the conference. We’re really excited about the opportunity to gather together from across the country – and want to encourage as many GfGD members as possible to get involved and come along.

And on Fridays, as already mentioned – we’ll be continuing with our Friday Photo series (we’re up to number 86 now!). If you have any photos from fieldwork, research or relevant placements – please send them to blog[at]GfGD.org.

Finally, we’ll also be carrying on with our range of guest and feature blogs, which means our blog will be busier than ever. The full schedule for our blog, together with our upcoming conference, fantastic opportunity to get involved in producing factsheets, and a range of other work, means it’s an exciting time for Geology for Global Development, and a great time to get involved.
