Georisks in the Mediterranean and their mitigation

An international scientific conference about Georisks in the Mediterranean and their mitigation is going to be held in Malta between the 20th and 21st July, 2015.  This Scientific Conference is organised by the University of Malta, as part of the SIMIT project: Integrated Civil Protection System for the Italo-Maltese Cross-Border Area.

The meeting will bring together experts and researchers in various fields, such as geology, geohazards, seismology, civil engineering, and civil protection to discuss theories, methodologies, case studies, modelling, and forecasting concerning the mitigation and effects of perilous natural events and their impact on society. Engineers, seismologists, geologists and other experts in related fields are invited to join the workshop in the beautiful historic environment of Malta.

The conference themes will focus on:

  • Geology and active tectonics of the Central Mediterranean
  • Geohazards – earthquake, tsunami, landslides, coastal erosion
  • Hazard assessment
  • Geophysical investigations and engineering seismology
  • Seismic vulnerability of buildings from isolated buildings to urban scale
  • Science, society and Civil Protection

Matthew Agius is a recent PhD graduate from the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in Ireland and is now doing research at the University of Southampton (National Oceanography Centre). His research focuses on the dynamics of the lithosphere beneath Tibet, the Central Mediterranean, and the Pacific Ocean. Matthew’s role as a young scientist representative is to promote the efforts done by young researchers and to engage in discussions that concern seismology students. You can reach Matthew via e-mail at matthew.agius@soton.ac.uk.
