Jiong Chen

Jiong Chen is a research scientist at CMA Earth System Modeling and Prediction Centre (CEMC). She earned her Ph.D. in 2000 from Peking University, after which she conducted postdoctoral research at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, investigating coherent structures in atmospheric turbulence. She subsequently joined the China Meteorological Administration, where she has dedicated her career to the development of numerical weather prediction systems and the continual improvement of operational forecast models. Her current work focuses on the development and diagnostics of the global forecast model, with a particular interest in model physics and physics-dynamics coupling.

Have you ever seen a weather forecast map that looked like it was wearing a striped sweater?

Have you ever seen a weather forecast map that looked like it was wearing a striped sweater?

This isn’t a new fashion trend in meteorology. For model developers, these unexpected stripes are a sign that something has gone wrong in the complex digital engine that powers our forecasts. Recently, our team at CMA Earth System Modeling and Prediction Centre (CEMC) encountered these very stripes in wind forecasts produced by an operational global model. We played the role of scientific de ...[Read More]
