PhD positions
PhD project at Cambridge, UK:
DEADLINE: Wednesday, July 14, 2021. We seek a talented PhD student to help investigate what happens when subduction stops using seismological data from Borneo’s first dense seismic network. Sabah, northern Borneo, is experiencing a post-subduction phase of the tectonic cycle, since subduction ceased along its eastern margin approximately 5 million years ago. In order to understand how and why subduction stopped, and how mantle processes and the regional stress field control this stage of the tectonic cycle, we require first-order images and geophysical constraints of the crust and upper mantle.

PostDoc positions
Research Geophysicist at DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR, US:
Deadline: 07/26/2021. Synthesizing geophysical observations to model and describe seismic sources and the earthquake process; Developing innovative, sophisticated computer algorithms and/or models that advance existing methods of defining earthquake source parameters and associated seismotectonics; Performing rapid characterization and documentation of significant global earthquakes; and, Leading in the response to damaging or catastrophic earthquakes at the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC). Young Research Fellow 2022 at JAMSTEC, Japan:
Deadline: August 16, 2021. Successful applicants are expected to conduct scientific work independently on research topics of their own choice or to become involved in research already being conducted at JAMSTEC. Research grants will be provided to successful applicants to facilitate the smooth start-up of their research at JAMSTEC (¥1,000,000 for the first fiscal year and ¥500,000 for each of the second and third years). The successful applicant will also have access to the necessary facilities and equipment in JAMSTEC during the contract period. Each successful applicant will be assigned a mentor and a sub-mentor. Two Postdoctoral Associate Positions in Seismology Available at SUSTech, China:
The Earth and Space Sciences department at SUSTech is looking for two postdoctoral researchers in seismology, including various directions focusing on understanding earthquake/volcano/landslide physics and imaging deep earth structure. The initial contract for successful applications would be for two years. Reappointment or promotion to be assistant/associate research professor is possible, subject to work performance and satisfactory progress. Postdoctoral Fellow in Geophysics at The Chinese University of Hong Kong:
Deadline: 2022-01-31. The research focus is on earthquake and volcanic processes. Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in geophysics or a related field at the time of appointment. Previous experience in at least one of the following areas is preferred: seismic/geodetic data processing/analysis, earthquake detection and location, seismic tomography, numerical modelling, and machine learning application in geophysics. The initial appointment is for one year and can be renewed subject to satisfactory progress. Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Toronto Mississauga, US:
Deadline: 2021-08-15. The Earthquake Physics Research Group in the Department of Chemical and Physical Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga (https://sites.google.com/view/skylui) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellowship. We specifically seek candidates with a background in observational seismology and/or numerical modeling of fault rupture dynamics.
Candidates must have a demonstrated record of excellence in research (such as publications in leading discipline-specific academic journals, presentations at significant conferences, and awards and accolades for work in the field), and must hold a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the time of hire. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative research at the highest international level. They will also be expected to mentor graduate and undergraduate students. Excellence in student mentoring may be demonstrated by successfully supervised student theses, presentations, or publications, evidence of strong performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, and strong referee endorsements on the subject of student mentoring. Applications should submit (1) a cover letter outlining their research and mentoring experience and areas of expertise, (2) a statement of research interests, (3) current curriculum vitae, and (4) names of two referees. The R&D Seismology & Acoustics (R&DSA) department operates a network of seismo-acoustical monitoring stations in the Netherlands. Volcano monitoring is done on the BES-islands where additional GNSS measurements are being made.
