Depth Resolution of Velocity Changes Associated with Strain Transients in Faults and Volcanoes
Institute: University of Padova, Italy
Deadline: 22 August 2025
How to Apply: Contact: piero.poli@unipd.it
Details: This research project will focus on quantifying the spatial sensitivity of velocity changes estimated from the correlation of seismic noise. Building on our previous work which showed that integrating seismological and geodetic observations over time provides key insights into earthquake cycles and volcanic system dynamics, we propose to advance this approach by developing a novel framework to spatially locate velocity changes. PhD candidates will gain expertise in geodetic and seismological data analysis, employing advanced modeling and processing techniques to derive strain and velocity variations from ambient seismic noise.
Contact: piero.poli@unipd.it - PhD in Seismic Sensing Networks and Smart City Applications (SeiSmart), 2 positions
Institute: University of Hamburg, Helmut-Schmidt University, and DESY
Deadline: July 2nd 2025
How to Apply: For any questions, contact: Oliver Gerberding, Katharina Isleif and Celine Hadziioannou
Details: Positions within the project SeiSmart: Research on and with seismic networks in smart cities. The project is a collaboration between the University of Hamburg, the Helmut-Schmidt University, and DESY. SeiSmart explores the use and benefits of seismic sensing networks—especially distributed acoustic sensing (DAS)—in urban areas and research campuses. Applications include high-precision experiments, structural health monitoring, and research for sustainability. The project leverages the WAVE Initiative (https://wave-hamburg.eu/) seismic network operating in Science City Hamburg Bahrenfeld and connects closely with gravitational wave detection experiments. The two positions focus on: Real-time seismic noise prediction for active compensation and DAS and seismic wave propagation modeling for structural monitoring of large research facilities More: https://www.lisamission.org/two-phd-positions-at-university-of-hamburg/.
