EGU25: A step towards Engagement, Gathering and Unity

EGU25: A step towards Engagement, Gathering and Unity
  • Are you a PhD aspirant looking for a potential supervisor?
  • Are you searching for research collaboration?
  • Your PhD is at the final stage, but you haven’t found a post-doctoral mentor yet?
  • Are you an introvert and can’t understand how to reach people at the conference?

Don’t worry!! The ECS team of the GMPV division is here to assist you in shaping your future goals. The last GMPV blog discussed the dos and don’ts of presentation, so this blog will shed light on another interesting but vital aspect of the upcoming EGU25.

Conferences are platforms that allow for new connections beyond the mere exchange of business cards and LinkedIn accounts.

The meeting of two personalities is like the contact of two chemical substances: if there is any reaction, both are transformed.

– Carl Jung

Information about new positions or opportunities is shared mainly through social sites nowadays. However, conferences provide the opportunity for direct interaction with potential supervisors, mentors, or recruiters.

Networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.

– Michele Jennae

Moreover, connecting people through a conference is helpful for newcomers in the industry or academia and paves the way for future collaborative research.

Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.

– Edward Everett Hale

So let’s explore how you will connect with people in the upcoming General Assembly-

(1) Look at the conference schedule on the EGU GA 2025 website and select the program group of your choice. This year, the GMPV division has a total of 10 program groups

(2) Now choose your favourite session or the session in your field of research;

(3) Check the name of the Convener and co-convener/s, and go through the abstracts submitted and their presenting authors.

Now, it’s time to reach out to your desired person before the conference….
  • If you are a researcher in search of collaboration, first send a ✉️ to the person of your choice, who can be the Convener, co-convener/s or the participant. First, you must share your views on their sessions or research and how they match your interests. Then, exchange the ideas you wish to execute in collaboration.
  • For PhD or Postdoc aspirants who wish to approach their potential supervisors, please mention your primary field of research or research interest and give a brief outline of the proposed research that you want to pursue.
EGU25 has begun? So start your networking with utmost dedication…
  • If you are an on-site participant, your first responsibility is to meet the person you contacted over email and openly discuss your thoughts. Don’t forget to attend your potential collaborator or mentor’s session, talk, or poster. For a more fruitful discussion, you may go through a few research papers relevant to the session’s topic and the subject of the talk or poster. This will help you to understand the presentation during the session and raise questions in your mind. A conference becomes more fruitful when it makes you curious. On the other hand, your logical questionnaire, followed by the presentation or session, will help others to evaluate your understanding and dedication to research. Don’t forget that outputs from both ends are necessary for a good research collaboration.

Don’t restrict discussion only to the conference hall; continue it at the dinner table with wine or beer🍺🍷. Don’t forget that there are ample examples of game-changing scientific research which were initiated at the dinner table😝😝;

  •  If you are a virtual participant, attend the session and ask your questions. If you can’t understand anything in an online session, take note of it and mail it later to the speaker or presenter.
General Assembly is over? Please don’t lose your connections….

(1) Keep in touch with your potential collaborators or mentors;

(2) Take regular updates on the progress of the topics you discussed and let him/her know about your stands;

(3) The opportunity to publish your work in a special issue often comes from your conference network. So don’t miss such chances.
