#vEGU21 Session in the Spotlight: Island arc volcanism along the Africa-Eurasia plate boundary

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! ☃
Which only means that the EGU abstract submission deadline is fast approaching. With 6 weeks left to go, have you decided which session to submit your abstract to?

Today we put a spotlight on session NH2.1 (Co-organized by GM9/GMPV11).

  • Are you passionate about reconstructing volcanic histories?✅
  • Does your research focus on processes at Island Arc volcanism?✅
  • Are you a fan of interdisciplinary science?✅
  • Are you interested in the effects that volcanic eruptions have on the environment and surrounding populations?✅

If you answered ✅ to the questions above, this session on “Island arc volcanism along the Africa-Eurasia plate boundary” could be the THE ONE for you! The conveners say:

Volcanic hazards and risk lie at the heart of global geoscience, with about 800 million people threatened by eruptions. Volcanoes impact humans and the environment through submarine explosions, tephra fallout, pyroclastic flows, earthquakes, tsunamis, and ocean acidification. Some large eruptions, such as the Late Bronze Age eruption of Santorini, destabilize entire civilizations. Many active volcanoes lie along the Africa-Eurasia plate boundary, from the Azores, through south-western Italy to the southern Aegean Sea. In recent years, there have been interdisciplinary research projects that have deepened our understanding of the formation and destruction of volcanoes and the accompanying mass transport. This session will focus on different approaches for reconstructing the histories of these volcanoes, the eruptive and hydrothermal processes that take place at them, and their impacts on the environment and surrounding populations. We invite contributions from all related scientific fields, both onland and in the marine realm.

This session is convened by Christian Huebscher, Tim Druitt, Paraskevi Nomikou and Jonas Preine – you can find more info here.
